It is time to put the new racists in their place
For too long we have tolerated their bigoted intolerance. We must tell them to their face we will not allow it again.
Two of the most recognizable characters of television history are Archie Bunker (Carroll O’Connor, left) and George Jefferson (Sherman Hemsley). Ironically, they played bigots, but they did so not only hilariously, but poignantly. Carroll O’Connor and Sherman Hemsley played the roles of racist bigots with finesse, style and, believe it or not, humor.
No one got their panties in a wad laughing at “The Jeffersons” or “All in the Family.” Hemsley’s program was spun off from O’Connor’s, so successful and popular was his character with the public. No, it was not because white people liked Archie Bunker’s ignorant racism nor that black people loved George Jefferson’s equally ugly bigotry.
Quite the opposite. We laughed because 1) they were funny, and 2) they lifted us up out of the discomfort and humiliation we felt by not putting real-life men and women like their characters in their place. It helped us to see the stupidity of racism, regardless of its source.
Best of all, we began to heal from the racial and social unrest of the ‘60s and ‘70s that so tore our nation apart.
Now, new forces of ignorance and hate are rising up, people who would cheer and “amen” George’s biting racist sarcasm and people who would give an “attaboy” to Archie’s uneducated bigotry.
Far more likely, however, is the majority would give out a great hew and cry to demand such characters be removed from the air, censored, shut up by declarations, edicts and mandates. That is not only also racism, it is a violation of the First Amendment. Yet they cannot recognize it as racism and they do not give one whit for the First Amendment.
They did not learn the lesson George and Archie so brilliantly taught us over 30 years ago: Bigotry, racism, intolerance, ignorance have no place in our society.
Yet it has sprung fully grown from the womb of Fascist Leftism permeating the minds of our young people, both black and white ― as well as Hispanic, Native American and Asian ― spawned by the cesspool of filth being taught in the guise of “higher education” in our nation’s colleges and universities today.
We must recall the lessons Archie and George taught us. We must fight the bigoted, racist intolerance being forced upon us by the self-appointed intelligentsia that claims to be far wiser and far more knowledgeable about what is best for all of us than we can be for ourselves.
The time for that nonsense to stop is far past due. Put these fake experts in their place. Tell them to their faces there is not room for their racism in America today.
